Dark web forums found offering Cerber ‘ransomware as a service’

The pro-Eastern European ransomware Cerber has been spotted on dark web Russian forums offering ransomware as a service, according to the cyber intelligence firm Sensecy.

Malwarebytes Labs conducted an analysis of the Cerber ransomware and discovered several customizable functionality settings, according to a blog posted by Malwarebytes programmer Hasherezade. The ransomware does not load if it detects that the user is located in certain “blacklisted” countries, or contains specific languages, file names or directories.

Cyber threats could overwhelm the healthcare industry

Healthcare organizations average about one cyber attack per month and almost half say they have experienced an incident involving the loss or exposure of patient information during the last year, leaving patients at risk of identity theft.

These are among the findings of a survey by security company ESET and the Ponemon Institute into cyber security in the healthcare sector.

27% of all malware variants in history were created in 2015

Last year was a record year for malware, according to a new report from Panda Security, with more than 84 million new malware samples collected over the course of the year.

That averages out to around 230,000 new malware samples a day, said Luis Corrons, technical director of Panda’s PandaLabs unit. Or 27 percent of all malware ever created.

Trojans continued to account for the main bulk of malware, at 51.45 percent, followed by viruses at 22.79 percent, worms at 13.22 percent, potentially unwanted programs such as adware at 10.71 percent and cases of spyware at 1.83 percent.

Top security stories of 2015

As many as 11 million customers may have been affected by a data breach at U.S. health insurance provider Premera Blue Cross, in the second large attack against the health care industry disclosed in the last two months.

The breach, discovered on Jan. 29, may have compromised customer names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, mailing and email addresses, phone numbers and bank account details, as well as claims and clinical information, Premera said on its website.
